Impact of Weight on Fertility

Numerous studies show that excessive body fat negatively affects hormonal balance, egg and sperm quality, embryo implantation success, and often leads to complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Even a 5–10% reduction in weight can significantly improve your reproductive outcomes – for both partners.

  • Obesity reduces the probability of natural conception by 30-50%,
  • Women with a BMI over 30 need, on average, twice as long to conceive as women with a normal weight,
  • Every 9 kg of overweight in a man reduces sperm count by approximately 10%

For these reasons, weight reduction is one of the key pillars of successful pregnancy preparation. A 5–10% weight reduction can restore ovulation, improve the menstrual cycle, and increase the chances of natural conception in women. A 2022 study from Denmark showed that men who were overweight and obese, who managed to lose weight and maintain this lower weight, achieved a twofold increase in sperm count after one year.
