Intrauterine Insemination – IUI

INFERTILITY TREATMENT

Intrauterine insemination is one of the basic and least invasive methods of assisted reproduction. The principle of this treatment procedure is the transfer of sperm using a catheter directly into the uterine cavity at the time of anticipated ovulation. This shortens their path to the egg and increases the probability of successful conception.

When is IUI used and what is its success rate?

This method is used primarily for patients with idiopathic infertility (without a known cause) or with milder fertility disorders. In addition to unknown causes of infertility, the most common indications for IUI include:

  • Mild male infertility (mild sperm analysis abnormality)
  • Mild endometriosis with patent fallopian tubes
  • Ovulatory disorders
  • Inability/unsuitability for vaginal intercourse
  • Use of donor sperm

Treatment Procedure

Infertility treatment using IUI is a painless and simple procedure, which does not require anesthesia. It can also be performed with thawed or donor sperm.

If a fresh sample is used, the partner provides an ejaculate in the first step. For better results, we recommend a 2-3 day period of sexual abstinence. The collected sample is then processed and concentrated. The classic method for sperm processing before insemination is the swim-up method, which helps us select the highest quality and most motile sperm. However, other sperm separation methods, such as MSS, can also be used. Sample processing usually takes around 90 minutes.

We perform IUI in the classic gynecological position. It is better if the patient has a moderately full bladder (it is recommended not to urinate approximately 1.5 to 2 hours before the procedure) for easier insertion of the insemination catheter. This catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity, where the sperm are then transferred, which takes only a few seconds. After the procedure, the patient can go home immediately.

IUI can be performed either in a natural cycle, without hormonal ovarian stimulation, or after hormonal stimulation, but much milder than with IVF treatment. Usually, from the day after the procedure, we recommend intravaginal use of progesterone, or other preparations, the dosage of which the doctor will specify in the discharge report. A pregnancy test is recommended only after 14 to 16 days from insemination, as earlier testing may lead to a false positive result.

This method of assisted reproduction is not covered by health insurance.

IUI Success Rate

The success rate of IUI depends on several factors, but it is generally relatively low, especially compared to the IVF method. The greatest influence on it is the female partner’s age and the male partner’s sperm analysis. The probability of pregnancy per treatment cycle ranges from 10-20% for couples where the female partner is under 35 years old. For older couples, the probability decreases to approximately 5-10%.
